A New Era for Private Higher Education in South Africa

A new chapter in South African higher education is underway. With the publication of the Policy for the Recognition of South African Higher Education Institutional Types (Gazette 50569, April 2024), the framework is set for eligible private higher-education institutions to apply for recognition as ‘private universities’ or ‘private university colleges’.

This new status allows these institutions to formally align their naming with the quality of their qualifications, which are already recognised, industry-relevant, and internationally benchmarked.

Leading the way is the Independent Institute of Education (IIE) — South Africa’s largest private higher-education provider — which is preparing for institutional re-branding of several of its campuses in line with these changes.

From IIE to Emeris: What’s Changing for Varsity College, Vega, and MSA?

The IIE is a respected education leader, home to some of South Africa’s most recognisable tertiary brands. Its institutions — Varsity College, Vega, Rosebank College, and Monash South Africa (MSA) — have shaped thousands of successful graduates over the years.

Starting in January 2026, three of these institutions — Varsity College, Vega, and MSA — will unite under a new name: Emeris University.

The name Emeris draws inspiration from Latin roots: Ephemeris (the path of celestial bodies) and Emeritus (merit and earned success). Together, they symbolise each student’s journey of growth and achievement.

As part of this transformation, ADvTECH is also unveiling a cutting-edge mega campus in Sandton, expanding the network to 13 campuses across 7 major South African cities. The rebrand reflects a vision of unity, innovation, and world-class education under one umbrella.

What the Emeris Rebrand Means for Students

The Emeris rebrand goes far beyond a name change. It’s a strategic move to strengthen academic quality, streamline systems, and enhance the overall student experience.

  1. Top-Tier Academics

Emeris retains the IIE’s impressive academic foundation — over two-thirds of its 300 academic staff hold Master’s or Doctorate degrees, ensuring rigorous, research-driven teaching across all faculties.

  1. Expanded Postgraduate Options

Students can look forward to more than 40 postgraduate programmes, with plans for further expansion in disciplines aligned with South Africa’s evolving job market.

  1. ECSA-Accredited Engineering

The IIE remains the only private institution in South Africa offering Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA)-accredited qualifications — a major advantage for students pursuing professional registration.

  1. Cross-Campus Flexibility

With a connected network of 13 campuses nationwide, Emeris could eventually introduce cross-campus transfers, giving students the flexibility to study in different cities while staying within the same academic system.

Emeris and the Path to University Status

The upcoming Higher Education Amendment Act paves the way for private institutions like Emeris to be formally recognised as private universities. This will be a milestone moment — affirming the academic credibility of Emeris degrees and boosting global recognition for graduates.

For ADvTECH, this move aligns perfectly with its long-term strategy of building a globally competitive, locally relevant education ecosystem. For students, it promises even greater confidence that their qualifications will carry weight across industries and borders.

“Emeris University isn’t just a rebrand — it’s the next step in South Africa’s higher education evolution,” said an ADvTECH spokesperson. “It reflects our commitment to creating spaces where academic excellence and innovation thrive.”

A New Chapter for Students

The launch of Emeris University marks a defining moment for South African tertiary education. With its strong academic foundation, expansive postgraduate options, and future university status, Emeris is set to raise the bar for private education nationwide.

For students, this rebrand represents more than a new name — it’s a promise of excellence, innovation, and opportunity. Whether you’re starting your first degree or pursuing postgraduate studies, Emeris aims to support every learner’s unique journey toward success.
